    Continuum description of profile scaling in nanostructure decay

    The relaxation of axisymmetric crystal surfaces with a single facet below the roughening transition is studied via a continuum approach that accounts for step energy g_1 and step-step interaction energy g_3>0. For diffusion-limited kinetics, free-boundary and boundary-layer theories are used for self-similar shapes close to the growing facet. For long times and g_3/g_1 < 1, (a) a universal equation is derived for the shape profile, (b) the layer thickness varies as (g_3/g_1)^{1/3}, (c) distinct solutions are found for different g_3/_1, and (d) for conical shapes, the profile peak scales as (g_3/g_1)^{-1/6}.     Enhanced hippocampal long-term potentiation and spatial learning in aged 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 knock-out mice

    Glucocorticoids are pivotal in the maintenance of memory and cognitive functions as well as other essential physiological processes including energy metabolism, stress responses, and cell proliferation. Normal aging in both rodents and humans is often characterized by elevated glucocorticoid levels that correlate with hippocampus-dependent memory impairments. 11ß-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11ß-HSD1) amplifies local intracellular ("intracrine") glucocorticoid action; in the brain it is highly expressed in the hippocampus. We investigated whether the impact of 11ß-HSD1 deficiency in knock-out mice (congenic on C57BL/6J strain) on cognitive function with aging reflects direct CNS or indirect effects of altered peripheral insulin-glucose metabolism. Spatial learning and memory was enhanced in 12 month "middle-aged" and 24 month "aged" 11ß-HSD1&lt;sup&gt;–/–&lt;/sup&gt; mice compared with age-matched congenic controls. These effects were not caused by alterations in other cognitive (working memory in a spontaneous alternation task) or affective domains (anxiety-related behaviors), to changes in plasma corticosterone or glucose levels, or to altered age-related pathologies in 11ß-HSD1&lt;sup&gt;–/–&lt;/sup&gt; mice. Young 11ß-HSD1&lt;sup&gt;–/–&lt;/sup&gt; mice showed significantly increased newborn cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus, but this was not maintained into aging. Long-term potentiation was significantly enhanced in subfield CA1 of hippocampal slices from aged 11ß-HSD1&lt;sup&gt;–/–&lt;/sup&gt; mice. These data suggest that 11ß-HSD1 deficiency enhances synaptic potentiation in the aged hippocampus and this may underlie the better maintenance of learning and memory with aging, which occurs in the absence of increased neurogenesis

    Low temperature shape relaxation of 2-d islands by edge diffusion

    We present a precise microscopic description of the limiting step for low temperature shape relaxation of two dimensional islands in which activated diffusion of particles along the boundary is the only mechanism of transport allowed. In particular, we are able to explain why the system is driven irreversibly towards equilibrium. Based on this description, we present a scheme for calculating the duration of the limiting step at each stage of the relaxation process. Finally, we calculate numerically the total relaxation time as predicted by our results and compare it with simulations of the relaxation process.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys.     Structure-property relations of metallic materials with multiscale microstructures

    Nanostructured metals have higher strength than those of the coarse grained metals but suffer from the extremely limited ductility. Development of the multiscale microstructures can improve the ductility of these high strength materials due to the introduction of a specific range of grain sizes in micro level. The present work relates the multiscale microstructures in metals to their overall structure properties using a fractal theory and the modified mean-field method, where three microstructural parameters are introduced and thus mechanical properties such as strength and ductility are presented as a function of these microstructural parameters. Meanwhile, with the applications of the finite element method, the multiscale unit cell approach is also critically developed and applied with a focus on predicting the related stress-strain relations of the metals with multiscale microstructures. For verification of these proposed theoretical and numerical algorithms, the mechanical properties of the pure copper with three-grain microstructures are investigated and the results from FEA and theoretical solutions have a reasonable agreement

    Fluctuations, line tensions, and correlation times of nanoscale islands on surfaces

    We analyze in detail the fluctuations and correlations of the (spatial) Fourier modes of nano-scale single-layer islands on (111) fcc crystal surfaces. We analytically show that the Fourier modes of the fluctuations couple due to the anisotropy of the crystal, changing the power spectrum of the fluctuations, and that the actual eigenmodes of the fluctuations are the appropriate linear combinations of the Fourier modes. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations with bond-counting parameters that best match realistic energy barriers for hopping rates, we deduce absolute line tensions as a function of azimuthal orientation from the analyses of the fluctuation of each individual mode. The autocorrelation functions of these modes give the scaling of the correlation times with wavelength, providing us with the rate-limiting kinetics driving the fluctuations, here step-edge diffusion. The results for the energetic parameters are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data for Pb(111) surfaces, and we compare the correlation times of island-edge fluctuations to relaxation times of quenched Pb crystallites.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures; to appear in PRB 70, xxx (15 Dec 2004), changes in MC and its implication

    Decay of one dimensional surface modulations

    The relaxation process of one dimensional surface modulations is re-examined. Surface evolution is described in terms of a standard step flow model. Numerical evidence that the surface slope, D(x,t), obeys the scaling ansatz D(x,t)=alpha(t)F(x) is provided. We use the scaling ansatz to transform the discrete step model into a continuum model for surface dynamics. The model consists of differential equations for the functions alpha(t) and F(x). The solutions of these equations agree with simulation results of the discrete step model. We identify two types of possible scaling solutions. Solutions of the first type have facets at the extremum points, while in solutions of the second type the facets are replaced by cusps. Interactions between steps of opposite signs determine whether a system is of the first or second type. Finally, we relate our model to an actual experiment and find good agreement between a measured AFM snapshot and a solution of our continuum model.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures in 9 eps file

    Late fetal and newborn granulopoiesis but not active renin is increased by maternal captopril treatment during perinatal kidney development

    Renin expression follows vascular development through the mouse kidney, regressing to glomerular poles by about P10, where renin is stored in dense core granules in juxtaglomerular cells. Homeostatic challenge to blood pressure causes release of active renin from the granules and recruitment of the renin lineage cells. We investigated the response to homeostatic challenge during late fetal development and following birth in a transgenic line expressing GFP under the renin promotor. Pregnant females were treated with water or captopril (30mg/kg/day), which inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme, from E15.5. We found an increase in renin transcription and expression by P1 following captopril treatment, with granulation increased at the glomerular poles and major arteries from E18.5. At P1, the granules showed a wide variation in electron density. Notably, rough endoplasmic reticulum was expanded in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) of captopril-treated pups at both time-points suggesting increased transcriptional activity. Paracrystalline material was observed in granules of captopril treated fetuses at E18.5 and in both treated and untreated pups at P1. Renin expression and some granules were confirmed in the kidney VSMCs by immuno-gold staining against GFP at E18.5. Importantly, we found no difference in active renin content between kidneys from treated and untreated pups at either age group. We therefore demonstrate a disconnect between granulation and active renin production in newborns when exposed to homeostatic challenge in utero

    BEACON:A Summary Framework to Overcome Potential Reimbursement Hurdles

    Objective To provide a framework for addressing payers' criteria during the development of pharmaceuticals. Methods A conceptual framework was presented to an international health economic expert panel for discussion. A structured literature search (from 2010 to May 2015), using the following databases in Ovid: Medline((R)) and Medline((R)) In-Process (PubMed), Embase (Ovid), EconLit (EBSCOhost) and the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED), and a 'grey literature' search, were conducted to identify existing criteria from the payer perspective. The criteria assessed by existing frameworks and guidelines were collated; the most commonly reported criteria were considered for inclusion in the framework. A mnemonic was conceived as a memory aide to summarise these criteria. Results Overall, 41 publications were identified as potentially relevant to the objective. Following further screening, 26 were excluded upon full-text review on the basis of no framework presented (n = 13), redundancy (n = 11) or abstract only (n = 2). Frameworks that captured criteria developed for or utilised by the pharmaceutical industry (n = 5) and reimbursement guidance (n = 10) were reviewed. The most commonly identified criteria-unmet need/patient burden, safety, efficacy, quality-of-life outcomes, environment, evidence quality, budget impact and comparator-were incorporated into the summary framework. For ease of communication, the following mnemonic was developed: BEACON (Burden/target population, Environment, Affordability/value, Comparator, Outcomes, Number of studies/quality of evidence).     The WESPAS survey program is the consolidation of two existing survey programs carried out by FEAS, the Malin Shelf herring acoustic survey and the boarfish acoustic survey. The Malin Shelf herring acoustic survey has been carried out annually since 2008 and reports on the annual abundance of summer feeding aggregations of herring to the west of Scotland and to the north and west of Ireland from 54°N to 58°30’N. The boarfish survey was conducted from 2011 using a chartered fishing vessel and reported the abundance of spawning aggregations of boarfish from 47°N to 57°N. In 2016 both surveys were combined and since then have been carried out onboard the RV Celtic Explorer over a 42 day period providing synoptic coverage of shelf waters from 47°N northwards to 58°30’N. Age stratified relative stock abundance estimates of boarfish, herring and horse mackerel within the survey area were calculated using acoustic data and biological data from trawl sampling. Stock estimates of boarfish and horse mackerel were submitted to the ICES assessment Working Group for Widely Distributed Stocks (WGWIDE) meeting in August 2018. Herring estimates are submitted to the Herring Assessment Working Group (HAWG) meeting in March every year. Survey performance will be reviewed at the ICES Planning Group meeting for International Pelagic Surveys (WGIPS) meeting in January 2019
